There were no tears or even a hint of anxiety at the school gates. In fact, six-year-old Princess Ingrid of Norway was positively skipping with delight as she arrived for her first day at school. Her parents Crown Princess Mette-Marit and Crown Prince Haakon have chosen to send her to a primary institution just down the road from the royal estate of Skaugum in the town of Asker. It's not the first time that a member of the country's top family has received a state education – Haakon did not attend a private school, either. But he, like his father King Harald, who was also on hand for the big day, was driven 15 miles every day to the capital Oslo. His and Mette-Marit's confident attitude could have come straight from a rulebook on how to handle your child's first day. At one point, the proud mum and dad swung the little girl up into the air for encouragement. Perhaps it's not surprising since Mette-Marit has been through this before. Marius, her son from a previous relationship, also attended the establishment. Once inside Janslokka School, Ingrid – who is second in line to the throne – shook hands with principal Else Beitnes Johansen as is customary in Norway. “We want Princess Ingrid Alexandra and all the other new first-graders to have a fantastic first day,” the head told the media. She said it was important to shield the princess from "unnecessary attention" so that she will have "as normal an education as possible".
