King Carl XVI Gustaf married Silvia Sommerlath, whose father was German and mother Brazilian and who had grown up in both countries. They met at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, where she was an interpreter and host. The wedding was held on June 19th, 1976 at Stockholm Cathedral in Stockholm, and the ceremony was performed by the Archbishop of Uppsala, Olof Sundby. The wedding was preceded, the evening before, by a Royal Variety Performance, where ABBA performed Dancing Queen for the very first time, as a tribute to Sweden's Queen to be. Let's remember it now: it was 35 years ago. King Carl Gustav from Sweden marrying Silvia Sommerlath
Text that comes as video comment on youtube: King Carl Gustaf and Silvia Sommerlath announced their engagement on 12 March 1976 and were married three months later, on 19 June in Stockholm Cathedral ("Storkyrkan Cathedral") ("Kungliga Hovförs") in Stockholm. It was the first marriage of a reigning Swedish monarch since 1797. If he had married Silvia during the reign of his grandfather, King Gustaf VI Adolf, he would have lost his position as Heir to the Swedish throne. This was due to the inflexibility of his grandfather, who believed that Royalty must marry Royalty.
Queen Silvia wedding dress was made by the french fashion house Christian Dior. The tiara was made for Empress Josephine Charlotte of France and was a gift from Napoleon Bonaparte.
